Why do I need travel insurance?

TravelLocal doesn't offer travel insurance and we strongly recommend that you arrange your own prior to travel. You may be asking yourself, with all of the Package Travel Regulations that the UK/ EU offer me as a customer, why is travel insurance necessary?

The short answer is: These regulations are not equivalent to travel insurance as they cover different situations. Package Travel Regulations cover issues with the package holiday and the travel services selling, creating and performing them.

There’s no denying that travelling is an exciting and enriching experience - but just as you’re eagerly preparing a list of sights to see and restaurants to book, you should also make sure you’re planning ahead for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during your trip. One crucial step of the booking process that often gets overlooked is travel insurance. Unlike Package Travel Regulations, it’s a vital part of your next adventure as it's designed to protect you.

Peace of mind

Travel insurance offers you financial protection against unexpected events. Whether it's a cancelled flight, lost baggage, or a medical emergency, having that extra cover ensures peace of mind at all times and at all stages of your trip.

Cancellations and interruptions

Imagine planning months ahead for a bucket-list trip, only to have it cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Travel insurance can help you recover non-refundable expenses, such as flight tickets, hotel bookings, and tour packages. It also covers trip interruptions caused by unexpected events, so you can either reschedule or receive compensation.

Medical emergencies

Medical emergencies can happen at any time, even when you're travelling. Without travel insurance, medical expenses can quickly become a hefty financial burden. You’d be covered for medical treatments, hospitalizations, and emergency medical evacuations, ensuring that you receive the necessary care without worrying about the costs.

Lost or delayed baggage

Most of us have probably already faced the frustrations of losing our luggage or dealing with baggage delays. Travel insurance provides cover in both instances, allowing you to replace essential items and continue your trip smoothly, as well as recover the costs of lost valuables.

Personal liability and legal expenses

In some unfortunate situations, you may be held legally responsible for causing injury to someone or damaging their property during your trip - not quite the relaxing holiday you were hoping for! Arranging travel insurance ahead of time means you’ll have personal liability coverage, protecting you from potential legal expenses and providing financial support if a lawsuit is filed against you.

When in doubt, always remember: opting for insurance means peace of mind and a hassle-free experience; the usually-reasonable cost that comes with it often outweighs any of the risks. It’s all part and parcel of planning a trip in a way that’s informed and responsible, both for you and your fellow travel companions, and ensuring a worry-free adventure.
